Traveling alone can be a bit frightening but ultimately it can really be enjoyable and rewarding.  The thought of travelling alone and not knowing a single soul in a foreign city can be enough to keep you from even thinking about planning a trip.  Yet finding company in a new place may be easier than you think!  With the right attitude, you could be able surround yourself with new companions.

When you are in a foreign location, try not to let any discomfort or stress show.  Instead, put on a pleasant face and say hello to people as you pass by. 

If you look grumpy and tired, it can make people less likely to approach you.   Although you might have had a long day, put on you brightest smile and introduce yourself when the opportunity arises.  It may seem frightening at first but it’s one of the best ways to meet people.

Some people are uncomfortable when having to start conversations.  If you happen to be one of those people, consider bringing something along something that can stimulate some conversation.   Maybe you could have some chocolates or another kind of candy.  Carry the book you are currently reading with you.  If you have an interesting and unique piece of jewelry that people often comment on, wear it out.

You may also want to have a few helpful items close by when travelling.  Umbrellas, maps, guidebooks and bug spray may be useful. A lot of travelers forget the simple things they need while away from home, so you may just end up being becoming someone important to other visitors.

It’s okay to be curious and ask the locals and other travelers questions.  Ask about the best restaurants, shops and sights in the city where you are staying.  A question is a great way to start a lasting conversation.  You can let the other person know that you’re interested in what they think and their opinions.  On top of that, you’ll get great information!

Safety is, of course, still very important when out and about in a new town.  Make sure that someone you know is aware of where you are going to be.  It’s also important to never reveal any personal information to strangers.  If you mistake them for someone trustworthy, they may take advantage of you.
When you plan on meeting someone you’ve recently met, meet in public places.  If you’re heading out late when it’s getting dark, don’t head too far away from where you are staying and always have a planned way to get home.
 
The most important thing to keep in mind throughout your trip is that this is your vacation and you should be having fun. Take advantage of the ability to go where ever you want, whenever you want! There will be no one else there to tie you down. Be confident and secure and you will have a great time.
