The longing a person can feel as they stare at beautiful pictures of luxurious beaches or skyscraping mountaintops and wish can result in an aching that won’t go away.  You give yourself the excuse that since you have no one to go with, there’s no point. If all that’s holding you back is that silly excuse, let it go and get excited about planning a much-needed getaway!

Worries like affordability and safety may be keeping you from taking your dream to the next step, but they are obstacles that can be overcome.  They shouldn’t keep you from making the trip of your lifetime.  If you spend too much time wringing your hands worrying, there won’t be any left for your trip!

Planning a trip alone may seem daunting if you’ve never tried before, but it is really quite easy.  Travel sites like Orbitz, Yahoo Travel, Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline are all there to help you get great prices on tickets and hotel rooms.  If you need help getting around, both Google and Yahoo have great map options.

Yet before you can book anything, you have to pick a place to travel.  You can go to a local bookstore and pick up some guides to give you some ideas.  Pick up some smaller guides where you won’t be too overwhelmed by a lot of information. 

There will most likely be some very large guidebooks available, but don’t let them frighten you away from a particular area.  The guidebooks for these areas probably represent multiple states and territories, so they need to contain a lot of information.  If you are interested in one of these areas, you can just flip right to the cities that you want to visit.

Using the internet to find out information on where you’re traveling is a great way to do research, but having a guidebook on hand at all times is very convenient. Your guidebook can come in handy while you actually get to your destination unless you decide printing out your information works better. 

The internet is great for travel ideas, too. However trying to leaf through all the pages that a search engine presents when you type in your destination can be quite overwhelming. Beware of websites that offer bad information or that tries to get you to buy something for your vacation.  If you use the web to do research, try to take everything with a grain of salt.

When you finally figure out where you want to go, you should plan on how to get there and where to stay.  Big travel websites can provide you with great discounts on anything you need.  You can even package you hotel room, car rental and flight together to get an even bigger discount.  This option can limit flexibility, so choose what works best for you.

Sometimes less than reputable hotels will offer their least desirable rooms online at a discount. It doesn’t happen all of the time, but make sure you have all the specifics of your room before buying.  You can even see if other travelers have rated hotels on review sites before you make your final selection.

Now that you have a bit of courage, you may already have an idea of where you want to take your trip.  Solo traveling can be an enjoyable and rewarding way to spend your free time.
