View all articles by DavidSafety is an important thing to keep in mind as a solo traveler. Traveling solo makes you more vulnerable to risks but if you’re cautious, you may be able to avoid many problems. Do research about where you’re going to go and what to expect when you get there. Also keep in some basic tips to stay safe as a solo traveler.
Always keep an eye on your drink. It’s rare, but there are places where people may try and slip something into your drink. This kind of crime usually ends in robbery of the person who had the drugged drink but can also lead to abuse.
To prevent something like this from happening to you, make sure that you always buy your own drink. Just because someone looks trustworthy doesn’t mean that they are. If you are concerned about drinking your drink, you can just “accidently” spill it. Also, if you meet someone while out drinking, don’t let them come to your hotel with you so they know where you are staying. Both your personal safety and possessions are at risk if the wrong person knows where you keep your things while you are out during the day. It is also good to keep in mind that this happens to men as often as women.
Try to limit you alcohol consumption when you are on vacation. It is important to stay aware of what’s going on around you. Being alone in a foreign country puts you at much more risk than being in your hometown. It would be a bad idea to cloud your judgment. If you feel pressure to drink from the people around you, there is nothing wrong with making it an “early night”.
It’s important to always know how to make your way back to where you’re staying and remain aware of your surroundings. If you happen to think you’re in trouble, you should have a planned escape route. Always be aware of the people near you. People who are up to no good often act “shady” or just make others feel uncomfortable.
You can make a quick exit if you’ve been able to plan a means of escape if that happens. Have a bus or train schedule on your person so that you know your options for leaving a particular areas. Some travelers find that if they don’t go too far from where they are staying, they feel comfortable simply heading back to their hotel or bed and breakfast.
If someone asks if you are traveling alone, it would be best if you said no. Even if you don’t know anyone in the area, it’s better to make up something rather than seem more vulnerable. Even pretend to call your fictitious travelling partner if you need to!
Never carry any more items and money than you might need while you are out. A lot of money and electronics in your purse or wallet can attract thieves who are always on the lookout for easy targets like that.
These are all great ways to keep safe while traveling solo, but also try and use common sense. Your instincts may be a great tool to use for a great vacation. Staying smart may be the key to staying safe!
