Many safety issues exist for travelers, especially with women.  Statistics show that there is a higher chance women will be targeted more often than men while traveling alone.  Unfortunately, there isn’t any one place that doesn’t have problems with female visitors and crime.  Assault and harassment are common crimes against women traveling alone.  Crimes can range from verbal to physical attacks. Physical harassment is more common in the developing world but other areas, even places like Western Europe, is not without their own incidents.
 
Traveling can be such a joyous experience that it may be well worth the risks.  However it’s not smart to take unnecessary risks.  Before taking your next vacation, be sure to take precautions to prevent being a victim of harassment.
 
Try and trust your judgment when you encounter the locals of the area where you are travelling.  When traveling, women often worry more about being culturally sensitive and personal safety is set aside.  Even if it feels rude, it is your right to avoid any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable.  It is better to risk offending someone than to be harassed.
 
Sometimes trying to change some the normal behaviors you’d usually use might help to stay safe when traveling solo.  Try taking a different route back to where you are staying and avoid keeping a predictable schedule.  Its fine to be friendly, but don’t be friendly enough to draw unwanted attention or advances.  If you want to avoid drawing attention to yourself, dress in neutral colors.
 
If there are other single women travelling alone where you are staying, you may want to suggest sticking together throughout when heading out.  You are less likely to draw attention to yourself if you stay in a group, especially at night.
 
Before you leave to go on your trip, talk to others who have gone to your destination.  Maybe the area you’re heading to isn’t so bad or it might be a good idea to think about bringing a friend along for added safety.
 
Always make sure you take precautions when going on a trip by yourself.  If the unthinkable does happen and you are assaulted, contact the proper authorities immediately.  If you are in a foreign country, you may want to contact your country’s embassy, too. 

Sometimes women take a self-defense course before they go on vacation and this can help them feel more confident and therefore, seem like less of an ideal target.  While your chances of being a victim of a crime while on vacation is slim, it is better to prepared and aware than caught off-guard.
