Solo traveling can be intimidating to some especially if you do not know where to visit. Not all places are so called "singles friendly" and many travel destinations are often best explored with groups of friends and family. If you are traveling alone, you might feel awkward visiting these places. However, there are still some parts of the world where you can explore on your own without feeling out of place.

Solo traveling can be intimidating to some especially if you do not know where to visit. Not all places are so called "single friendly" and many travel destinations are more suited for couples or best explored with a group. If you are traveling alone, you might feel awkward visiting these places. However, there are still some parts of the world where you can explore on your own without feeling out of place.

If dodging hand-in-hand couples isn't your preferred activity, here are some of the best places for solo traveling you might want to consider instead:

1.  Florence, Italy

Florence is one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in Italy and the world. The city is filled with artists, musicians, lovers of history and those who are culturally-inclined. People in Florence are friendly and helpful and you're likely to find a number of solo travelers alike exploring this place. Denene Brox, an avid solo traveler has this to say about Florence: "Although I was alone in Florence, I was rarely lonely. And when I was lonely, it was because I chose to be and that choice is a beautiful thing".

2.  Mexico City, Mexico

Going it alone on your next trip? Consider a visit to Mexico City, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city chock full of world-class museums, an array of restaurants and arty cafes, and a nightlife as good as any in Latin America. You’ll find a lot of solo travelers there, and it’s easy to meet and get acquainted with fellow travelers from around the world.

3.  Seville, Spain

If you are in Spain, head on to Seville, a university town which boasts plenty of singles, and the locals here are extremely friendly. A rich history and culture and warm weather most of the year add to the draw. Spaniards never sleep, so there is always something to do – into the wee hours of the morning.

4.  Marseille, France

Marseille is the second largest city in France with a young, multicultural population that gives Marseille a unique flavor. The city boasts many interesting museums, galleries and striking monuments that are well worth a look. Marseille had a rough reputation in the past, but the city is now about as safe as most major cities, even for solo travelers. However, as in any other city, it's wise to stay alert and practice safety precautions at all times.

5.  Chicago, U.S.

U.S. cities are great choices for solo trips, particularly for the novice traveler, and Chicago being one of the top favorites. Chicago is a pleasant surprise to most people once they come for a visit. There are so many museums, parks and festivals, that you’ll never feel alone. The best part is that the city sponsors a complimentary “greeter” (www.chicagogreeter.com) to newcomers to present a firsthand look at the city through the eyes of a local.
